Nauticus Gear Rating Tool

Nauticus Machinery Knowledge Centre Help library Tools and Calculations Gear Rating Tool

Module Description

The Nauticus Gear Rating tool evaluates the strength and durability of cylindrical and bevel gears in marine applications. It calculates the tooth root strength, surface durability, subsurface fatigue and scuffing according to DNV standard and relevant ISO standards. The tools supports both main class and ice class strength calculation.

Key Features

  • Support gear rating calculation for cylindrical gear according to DNV Class Guidelines 0036 and ISO 6336.
  • Support gear rating calculation for bevel gear according to DNV Class Guidelines 0036 and ISO 10300.
  • Subsurface fatigue strength calculation according to DNV Class Guidelines 0036.
  • Scuffing calculation based on flash temperature method according to DNV Class Guidelines 0036 and ISO 6336-20.
  • Ice-Class calculation based on Finnish-Swedish Ice Class Rules, IACS Polar Ice Class Rules and DNV Class Guidelines-0041 for gear with ice class notation.
  • Customizable material properties and life factors to modify fatigue strength and reform the SN curve.
  • Graphical and tabular output providing load sharing factor and flash temperature along contact path, safety factors, and compliance checks.

Workflow

  1. Model setup by defining gear type, calculation standard, geometry data, material properties and lubrication data.
  2. Ice-class data specification for ice-classed projects, including ice class notation and design torque.
  3. Load case definition by specifying external load properties and internal dynamic properties.
  4. Perform calculation to obtain the main class results (and ice class results if relevant).
  5. Result evaluation and compliance check by comparing results against the criterions.
  6. Generate Reports summarizing stress analysis, fatigue calculations, and compliance results.
