Overview
Access to a Bladed 4 licence is required to run the Bladed 4 GUI or simulations.
Setting up your access to a licence will depend on how your licence is being hosted (you will be advised which is the relevant option):
- On a USB hardware dongle:
- Used for most licence purchases (and occasionally for evaluations or when taking part in a training course)
- Follow Sections A and B below.
- On a DNV cloud licence server:
- Often used for evaluations or when taking part in a training course (also sometimes for licence purchases).
- Follow Sections A and C below.
A. Checking the licence manager
The Sentinel licence manager is installed when running the Bladed 4 installer (if it has not already been previously installed).
If installing Bladed 4 for the first time on a machine, check that the licence manager has been installed correctly by opening http://localhost:1947/ in a web browser:
- If a web page loads successfully, this indicates the licence manager is installed and running correctly.
- If a web page does not load successfully, this indicates that the licence manager has not been installed (or the licence manager service is not running). It will currently not be possible to apply V2C files or run Bladed 4 - please contact us for further assistance.
B. Setting up a dongle-hosted licence
Overview
Bladed 4 licences are hosted on USB hardware dongles (sent from the Bladed support team by courier). Dongles are identified by a four-digit "DT" number printed on the plastic tag attached to the dongle (as well as by the "Key ID", shown on certain licence manager web pages). Please note that software licences (i.e. licences not hosted using a dongle) are not available.
A licence is activated on a dongle by applying a V2C file (sent from the Bladed support team by email).
If you have just purchased a new Bladed 4 licence, you will have been sent a new dongle and/or a V2C file. Note that for new purchases you will usually be initially provided with a temporary licence - a further licence extension will be provided on receipt of payment.
The procedure for setting up your licence depends on whether it is a standalone or network licence:
- Standalone licences
- Sometimes referred to as "local" licences
- Hosted on a black USB dongle plugged into your machine
- Follow Sections B1 and B2 below
- Network licences
- Hosted on a red USB dongle plugged into a remote licence server (or into your machine)
- Follow sections Sections B1 and B3 below
B1. Applying a V2C file
A V2C file can be applied to a dongle plugged into the local machine using the instructions below:
- Ensure that the dongle is plugged into a spare USB port on the machine.
- Save the V2C file to an accessible location (on the local machine or on the network).
- Navigate to http://localhost:1947/_int_/checkin.html in a web browser.
- Select Select File..., choose the V2C file and click Open.
- Click Apply File.
- If the update was successful, a confirmation message will be shown.
- If the update was not successful, an error message may be shown. Please contact us for further assistance.
If the dongle is plugged into a remote licence server, view further guidance.
B2. Standalone licence setup
To use a standalone (local) licence on a machine, please first ensure that:
- Bladed has been installed on the machine
- the USB dongle is plugged into a spare port on the machine
- the licence has been activated on the dongle (by applying the V2C file)
No additional configuration should be required - you can now try to run the Bladed 4 application.
B3. Network licence setup
If setting up a new licence server:
- Follow the instructions in Sections 2.1.1 and 2.1.3 of the Bladed 4 Licensing Guide to configure the licence server, and plug the dongle into a spare USB port on the host machine.
- To connect to a licence server from a client machine, follow the instructions in Section 2.2.3 of the Bladed 4 Licensing Guide.
If connecting to an existing licence server:
- To connect to a licence server from a client machine, follow the instructions in Section 2.2.3 of the Bladed 4 Licensing Guide.
Bladed 4 can also be run directly on the machine that the network dongle is plugged into (as if it were a standalone (local) dongle)
C. Setting up access to a DNV licence server
You will have been provided by email with the IP address of the DNV licence server that you will be using. To set up access to this licence server:
- Navigate to the licence manager configuration page (http://localhost:1947/_int_/config_to.html) in a web browser.
- Ensure that the “Allow Access to Remote Licenses” checkbox is ticked.
- Enter the IP address of the DNV licence server in the “Remote License Search Parameters” textbox. Your screen should now look similar to this:

- Click the “Submit” button.
- Wait a short while, and then click on the “Features” link at the left-hand side of the page (or use this link: http://localhost:1947/_int_/features.html) - you should see a list of licence features (similar to the image below), which indicates that your machine is able to access the licence on the licence server:
